Optimizing Overdraft Revenue: Trends & Tactics

Original Broadcast Date: March 30th, 2017
Duration: 60 minutes including Q&A session

Price: $349.00

Overdraft Revenue is one of the most critical forms of fee revenue at Financial Institutions. Today, OD Revenue is at $32.9B, an increase of $400M since last year. There are several factors that contribute to optimizing fee revenue such as Opt-in, pricing, limits, cost, and compliance.

In the past 6 months, 11.0% of all depositories have changed their OD Price. Of those who adjusted their price, 34.9% decreased it, the largest amount we’ve seen in the past 5 years. Although the national OD price has remained at $30, the recent decrease in price may be signaling a new trend to emerge: depositories are pricing overdrafts as a safety net instead of a penalty.

How does a decrease in price affect OD Revenue and Volume? Will this change boost opt-in rates or will it trigger a fall of OD revenue?

The Brave New Word of Checking

Presented by J.V. Proesel, Chief Compliance Officer and Director of Client Services and Danielle Martorano, Senior Financial Analyst and Director of Research

Checking is going thru a revolution. Less than a decade ago, having more than 10 debit or credit transactions per month was considered high. Now, checking account users have more than triple that, with an average of over 30 per month, or at least one transaction per day. The volume and type of transactions are changing the future of checking. Large Financial Institutions are no longer having a distinct advantage in checking. Influential services like banking Apps and Reloadable Prepaid Cards are coming into play and changing the checking account as we know it. Yet, some trends like Free Checking are keeping pace.

Financial Institutions are also beginning to consolidate their checking accounts. The reoccurring question many are still trying to figure out is: How do you offer less checking account options while, in return, giving the consumer more? While a staggering 96% of Financial Institutions have unprofitable checking, we see that Basic Checking fees of interchange and overdrafts are driving checking to profitability.

Moebs $ervices June 2016 Survey on checking accounts includes over 3,800 Financial Institutions. Our study shows a groundbreaking diversification of checking accounts that has never been observed before.

Topics we’ll cover include:
  1. Rise of Basic Non-Interest Checking with a Flat Monthly Fee
Why is Flat Fee Checking coming back? What other account types are being offered?
  2. The Secret Checking Account - Reloadable Prepaid Card (RPC)
Why Consumers Love RPCs?  What are the winning features of an RPC?
  3. The Drivers of Checking: Geography, FI Size, Design, FI Type
Regional Differences? Is Bigger Better? Out with the Old in with the New?
  4. Transaction Checking, Relationship Checking, or Both?
Are Millennials Driving Checking Design? Are Apps playing a part?
  5. The Evolution of Checking to Transaction Account
What will checking look like in 2020? How do you get ahead of the game?
  6. How Wells Fargo will Affect Your Checking Account Performance
What are FIs doing to fulfill the wants and needs of consumers in checking and selling?

Overdraft Revenue and Volume are increasing while Price remains constant. With OD Revenue currently at $31.9 Billion, what is the probability it will keep rising and hit $40 Billion by 2020? The CFPB has the potential to help Financial Institutions with the recent proposal to eliminate Payday Loans. However, other components are affecting consumer behavior and consequently work against a rising OD Revenue. Will Mobile Apps, which make managing a checking account simple and easy, begin to impact consumer Overdraft behavior? Along with that, the Re-loadable Prepaid Card, which does not allow overdrafts, gives the consumer the ability to avoid them altogether. With a focus on eliminating Payday Lenders and the changing evolution of banking and services, the Overdraft future appears complex and cloudy.

Moebs’ annual survey on checking accounts and fees has been expanded to more than 3,800 Financial Institutions – Banks, Thrifts, and Credit Unions. This gives Moebs the ability to understand the current trends and future progression of not only Overdrafts, but the industry as a whole. With years of experience and gained knowledge of the industry, Moebs $ervices can provide answers to the future of Overdrafts.

Is Opt-In Essential? Should OD Channels be priced differently?

Are high Opt-in Rates Beneficial?  How does a successful Opt-in program create revenue?
  4. Status of CFPB on ODs, Payday Loans, Reloadable Prepaid Cards
What will the CFPB do with PDLs? When will the CFPB Act on ODs?

Topic: Price Smarter in 2016 – Beat the Competition
Original Air Date: October 29th, 2015
Length of Webinar: 60 minutes

Deflation and Regulation are forcing all Financial Institutions to rethink how they price their services.

The drop in the price of oil is forcing down everything from a can of tuna to a board of lumber – this is deflation or, its lesser form, disinflation.  Expanding Regulations are increasing the cost of compliance. Today Main Street Financial Institutions have 4 people handling compliance versus less than 1 seven years ago.

Smart Financial Institutions need to respond to the economic environment, address compliance issues and watch out for the competition. Those competitors are not just a bank or credit union down the street but also Walmart, Apple Pay, Starbucks, Pay Pal, etc.

The only option to stay competitive and profitable is to practice Smart Pricing.

How can my institution be more competitive?

Six steps to Price Smarter and Beat the Competition become this Webinar’s Agenda:

I.    Learn that Pricing is more than Price

II.    Mapping Price to Overcome Compliance

III.    Re-invent Retail CDs to Match the Chief Competitor

IV.    Pay High Rates for  Checking,  Reduce Costs & Increase Revenue

V.    Use Price to turn Branches into Selling Machines

VI.    Change Fee Prices to Increase Revenue

Pricing is more than Price. The price of a service is the result of a Pricing Process that includes a systematic review of all of the elements of Pricing: Value. Benefit. Costs. Competition. Volume. Relationships. Risks.  Compliance.  Then take the results of your analysis and match them against the empirical data you’ve distilled from call reports, CFPB complaints, competitive shopping and your in-house CRM.

Mapping Price to Overcome Compliance is a way to confront the challenges of government regulation.  The CPFB has thousands of comments received directly from consumer that tell you exactly what the consumer doesn’t like.  These dislikes can be harnessed to provide for better price.

Re-Invent Retail CDs to Match the Chief Competitor is a way to get Retail CDs from becoming almost extinct. Government is the chief competitor to banks and credit unions for Retail CDs.  We’ll review the significant impact of re-inventing the Retail Certificate of Deposit and how the change can give you a competitive advantage.

Pay High Rates for Checking, Reduce Costs & Increase Revenue is borrowing the play book of the business transaction accounts to grow checking faster than ever before.  Yet you will pay for your costs and make checking with is unprofitable for 95.5% of Financial Institutions a net chief revenue source for you.

Use Price to turn Branches into Selling Machines recognizes the huge potential staring you in the face at each of your branches.  Some banks and credit unions are already totally retrofitting front line personnel with different prices.  This webinar will give you insight in how they do it.

Change Fee Prices to Increase Revenue identifies seldom used sources of fee review to confront and confound your competition, all while you lower price and become more profitable.  Most importantly this does not deal with overdraft service at all. It’s a challenge, particularly for deposit services, but we’ve identified those who do it and you can to.

Specifically What are the Takeaways?
Our Webinar will demonstrate how you can use pricing elements and marketplace information to reconfigure your services like Checking, CDs, Fee Services and Loans to better meet the needs of your consumers and your institution.  We’ll discuss why account pricing is a better approach than transaction pricing because it avoids cumbersome CFPB regulations.

How is a Moebs Webinar Different?
Our Webinar will give you ways Moebs Services has worked with hundreds of financial institutions over the last 30 years.  We’ve gathered information on thousands more.  We survey 2,806 Financial Institutions annually.  We know the key ingredients of smart pricing and want to share them with you.
