Today 67 years ago May 6, 1954 Roger Bannister was the first human to run a mile faster than 4 minutes. He ran the mile at 3 minutes 59.4 seconds. Bannister did this at 6 pm on the Iffley Road Track at Oxford, England.

23 days after Bannister broke the 4 minute mile, Diane Leather also of England broke the 5 minute mile for woman. She ran 4:59.6.
The current men’s record is held by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco. In 1999 he ran the mile at 3:43.4 . He was 25 years old at the time of the mile record the same age as Roger Bannister. Sifan Hassan of Ethiopia holds the current woman’ record for a mile at 4:12.3 set in 2019. READ FULL ARTICLE
