ATM fees at Chicago-area banks are higher than the national average, and higher than most U.S. cities, according to economists at Moebs $ervices. The main reason for such high fees is that among Chicago's banks, "there's no dominant player or two players, so you have a situation where there's a tendency to drive the price up," said Mike Moebs. Moebs predicts that more people will use the cash-back option on their debit cards as a way to avoid ATM transactions and their corresponding fees.
